Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
What is obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions), and / or repetitive (compulsive) behaviors. Repetitive behaviors, such as hand washing, counting, checking, or cleaning, are often done in the hope of avoiding or causing disturbing thoughts to disappear. However, performing the 'rituals' provides only temporary sedation, while not doing so significantly increases anxiety.
Signs and symptoms
People with obsessive-compulsive disorder suffer from unwanted and stubborn thoughts and imaginations, or from a sense of the urgent need to perform certain rituals. They may have an obsession with bacteria or dirt, and they will take their hands off again and again. They may be full of doubts and will feel the need to check certain things over and over again.
